Our History
Founded in 2008 in Alberta, Canada, Well Control Group began with a clear mission: to raise the standard of well control training in the oil and gas industry. As an IWCF and IADC-accredited facility, we quickly became a trusted provider of drilling and completion training for hundreds of oilfield workers, while also offering specialized programs in blowout recovery and kick control for energy companies around the world.
By 2014, we expanded east, opening a new training center in Eastern Canada and broadening our offerings to include a full range of safety courses and services. This expansion introduced recognized certifications such as Energy Safety Canada H2S Alive, Confined Space Entry and Monitor, and Fall Protection, allowing us to better serve workers across Canada — from oil and gas professionals to safety teams in other industries — with the essential credentials needed for both onshore and offshore operations.
In 2018, we launched a dedicated automation and technology division, focused on delivering innovative solutions for drilling operators worldwide. From advanced monitoring systems to operational efficiencies, our goal has always been to equip our clients with tools that enhance safety, reduce downtime, and improve performance.
Today, Well Control Group is proud to be one of only three accredited schools in the world offering the IADC WellCAP Plus program. Our team of experienced engineers and instructors has responded to well control incidents across Canada and internationally, providing both remote assistance and on-site field support during high-risk and complex drilling operations.
From our inception to the present day, our commitment has remained the same: to provide industry-leading training, safety services, and technical expertise that prepare oil and gas professionals and safety workers alike for the toughest challenges — in the field, on the rig, and on every job site.

Javed Shah, P. Eng.
Owner & Director of Operations
Javed Shah is the driving force behind Well Control Group, bringing over two decades of hands-on experience in the oil and gas sector. Since founding the company in 2008, Javed has led its growth from a single training facility in Alberta to a nationally recognized provider of IWCF and IADC-accredited well control, drilling, and safety training.
Internationally respected for his expertise in well kill operations and blowout recovery, Javed has personally responded to high-risk incidents in Canada and abroad, providing both remote guidance and on-site intervention during dangerous and complex drilling emergencies. His calm leadership and proven technical strategies have helped operators regain control in some of the most challenging well situations.
Javed’s work extends beyond the field. He is the holder of multiple patents for innovative oilfield technologies designed to improve safety, reduce downtime, and enhance operational efficiency. His commitment to engineering innovation led to the launch of Well Control Group’s automation and technology division in 2018, ensuring that clients benefit from cutting-edge solutions designed to address real-world challenges.
Under his leadership, Well Control Group became one of only three schools in the world accredited to deliver the prestigious IADC WellCAP Plus program. Whether developing training curricula, advising on safety procedures, or leading emergency well control efforts, Javed’s vision remains the same:
